ABOUT LIFE IN MOTION
Jana Beutler Holland, a former teacher and Masters level therapist, started Life in Motion Coaching in 2003 when she discovered that coaching was how she wanted to use her unique blend of skills and expertise in working with people. As a successful business entrepreneur, she and her husband had found great successful and fulfillment as personal fitness trainers. As owners of SWAT Fitness & Personal Training, their goal above all things was—and still is— to make a difference in their clients’ lives.
Jana also knew that in order to truly be one’s best (healthy and happy in both body and mind), and to live a fulfilled and happy life—there must be balance—and that regardless of how much time or money people spent on their bodies—the TRUE changes happened when they spent time and resources on developing their minds and spirits, setting priorities, examining their values, and working on issues which were holding them back from being their very best.
For Jana — the very best part of being in the fitness industry was in the education, guidance, and ongoing support of her clients as much as the actual fitness instruction. After Graduate School, where she obtained a Masters in Educational Psychology, she discovered that coaching combined what she loved about physical fitness and personal training, with what she loved about teaching and counseling. With coaching, she was able to provide instruction, guidance, support, and expertise in a variety wellness, lifestyle, and life coaching to the general public.

Here’s what she says about the Coaching Process, and Why she’s a Coach:
“Why did I become a Coach?”
Throughout most of my life, in one capacity or another, I think I’ve always been a coach. Helping others, and truly gaining an understanding of why people do what they do—and don’t do what they don’t do—has always been important to me. Coaching is something I’ve always done, something that I’ve always loved, and something which seems to come naturally for me. I think it even started in childhood—when as the oldest of 7 children in a blended family, I took it upon myself to be the “get ‘er done” one in the family. (Much to the chagrin of my younger siblings, of course, since I preferred to get things done by having them do the work....) From a young age I was a director, a teacher, a mentor, a guide, a rule maker, a rule enforcer, and quite often I was even a rule breaker. But over the years, my ability to empathize, problem-solve, and mediate became important in my life.
Of course, I haven’t always called it “coaching.” I explored several career paths—all of them very rewarding and full of opportunities to learn— before deciding that building a practice as a Wellness. Lifestyle, and Life Coach was really the right choice for me personally and professionally.
Before becoming a Coach, I had been a High School English Teacher, a Counselor, a law enforcement Probation Officer, and a personal fitness trainer. And in each profession, I found that I was the most satisfied, successful, and effective when I was working alongside others, helping them (and myself) gain clarity, knowledge, and skills, and then seeing the wonderful changes that followed when an action plan is put in place.
I found that I worked best and was at my best when I had one goal, and one common responsibility and priority: helping people get better results. The careers in which I explored how to best do that have changed along the way, but I have always been committed to personal growth, and to helping others discover their unique potential and how to realize it. It’s what I know, it’s what I love, and it’s something I’m lucky to be good at.
“What did you learn as a Teacher, a Law Enforcement Officer, and a Counselor?
Simple—The Good Ones act very much like coaches!
Success in each of those occupations is completely dependent on how well a person is able to help other people get desired outcomes and results. Results are the very criterion by which each of these professionals is judged, evaluated, and compensated. And each must be skilled at using a careful balance of teaching, asking tough questions, listening, encouraging, and pointing out some tough truths and holding others accountable, when necessary. I’ve been fortunate to have had so many great opportunities to grow and learn, and I still do so—every day, by working with clients (like you) who want and need a challenge, are willing to face fear head on, and have the courage to make necessary changes that will lead to greater success, better health, and, hopefully, more happiness and satisfaction.
“What makes you different?”
I don’t know if I am, to be honest. I think of myself as being a very normal, average person with a pretty decent education and a wealth of life experience (mostly from struggles, challenges– and lots of mistakes.) My varied professional background and own life experiences allow me to utilize skills from teaching, counseling, and personal training, to coach people of all ages and backgrounds who are looking for results—positive life change. By teaching and guiding, providing accountability, and using some very basic therapeutic principles with my coaching clients, they are able to effectively make changes that improve the quality of their lives, their careers, and their mental and physical health, leading to greater satisfaction, fulfillment, and personal and professional success.
My coaching approach is to provide effective tools to help otherwise very functional, successful clients get over hurdles that have them stuck. I believe that any individual can benefit from guided activities, assignments, and questions designed to help them become more self aware of strengths and weaknesses, self-talk, and sabotaging patterns of behavior. For me, coaching is a perfect blend of my skills. Having a Coach is like having your own personal Probation Officer, Teacher, Counselor, and Personal Trainer, all rolled into one.
What is a Life in Motion?
When the body is in motion, it has purpose, energy, and momentum. And the more you move, the stronger, more flexible, and more resilient your body becomes!
A life in motion is very much the same. A life in motion has direction, momentum, energy, and purpose. It is propelled forward by sheer inertia once it has a destination and gets a good shove in the right direction.
A sedentary object, however, can rarely get moving on its own without some kind of external force or thrust of energy to put it into motion. And the heavier it is, the more force it takes. That’s where your Life in Motion Coach comes in—motivating you, empowering you, and encouraging you to get yourself in gear.
